Physiotherapy throughout pregnancy and post-partum can empower women with an understanding of the many changes that occur in their body and how it functions during this time.
During pregnancy, physiotherapy exercises and treatments help to maintain core function, address postural changes and pain, and prevent issues like prolapse and pelvic floor dysfunction - all while helping you maintain the level of activity that you enjoy.
Postpartum physiotherapy can start within the first weeks of having your baby, or even years after you had your baby. The interventions used will vary depending on where you are at in your postpartum journey and what your specific areas of concern are. They can also vary depending on the type of delivery you had - whether by c-section or vaginally. In general, interventions will address core and pelvic floor function, diastasis rectus healing, restoring function through the hips and pelvis, and restoring postural alignment and function through neck, shoulders, rib cage and back. Post c-section physiotherapy may also involve scar tissue desensitization and mobilisation.
The goal with pregnancy and postpartum physiotherapy is to help you bridge the gap from where you are at, to where you want to be in terms of your function, activity levels and tolerances. Interventions will always be wholistic, evidence based, and safe.
